Token Surfboards is a small label of hand-shaped surfboards born out of a respect for past designs, a celebration of the sea and the camaraderie of riding waves.
Christian Boalt is a public school teacher, environmentalist, and surfboard shaper who recently became a father. Christian grew up surfing the beaches of Florida during the thruster heyday of the 90’s. After bouncing around the country he finally settled in NYC where he was drawn to the empty lines of the northeast winter swell. After a few winters surfing, his love affair started all over again. This time it was in a new direction, drifting along in the current of the revival frenzy of diverse shapes and designs.
After moving back to Florida with his wife Lisa and their baby daughter May, he wanted to foster the open-minded surfing-for-the-fun-of-it ethos he shared with his friends in New York. So he applied his DIY spirit to his new surroundings and began hand-shaping surfboards. The motivation he says was simple, “these are the kinds of boards I love to ride.” After learning as much as possible from every “old timer” shaper he could track down, Christian initially began shaping boards for himself and his friends. Token Surfboards is his vision realized.
